Okey dokey. That was an interesting start to my day. Jumping into a cold pool at 6:00 am to teach...wait...REteach myself to swim. My trainer asked me to go ahead and swim just a few feet to see how my form was. She told me, at the end of the hour, that her first thought after watching me was "oh my, it's going to be a long hour." LOL. Ok so I am sure I looked horrible when I first got in because it has been so long since I have had to do any swimming in proper form. I probably looked like I was drowning. But after a few moments of my trainer explaining what proper form looks like, I was well on my way. By the end of the hour I was swimming like a pro. Ok maybe not a pro but a hell of a lot better then when I began.
Swimming is hard. I knew it would be because I have tried swimming laps before and it kills me every time. This time was really no different. I could swim two laps before I was completey out of breath. When you are trying to learn how to swim with good form and with the intent of doing this some day for competition, it's really hard. You have to remember to pull you arm down into the water making a S shape, bring your arm up, breathe on the right side only, elbow up to the celine as you bring your arm around, arms and wrists should be straight, and then you have to kick constantly. Ok sounds easy, but when you've got that much stuff going on in your brain and your heart is pounding so loud you swear it might just jump out of your chest, it's not so easy. Then I got tired...and needless to say...my form went to hell. I don't even think my arms were coming out of the water at that point. I was quickly running out of breathe each lap and my mind all of a sudden decided to start trying to make me breathe when my face was in the water. That worked AWESOME! And just as a side note, when you start choking up a lung full of water in a swimming pool, it echoes really really loud, to the point that it gets every swimmer to stop and look at you. Yep HI it's just the new girl trying to learn how to swim. I am ok. Uuuggg. So back and forth I went until I finally got a pretty good rythm down. By that point it was time to go and I was exhausted and so freaking hungry. What is it about swimming that makes you so hungry??? I am mean I am hungry after a good workout but not like this! I felt like I could actually get my money's worth of an all you could eat buffet. Needless to say, I was tired when I got done. Had I not had to got to work I would have just gone straight home and to bed. Of course I guess that would have defeated the purpose of my workout...sort of like the Starbucks skinny vanilla latte that I grabbed on my way into work. Yummmyyyy
